Questions and Answers
How Does Laser Hair Removal Work?
The Diode Laser used by SCLaser removes unwanted hair by emitting three wavelengths of light energy, this passes through the skin and is absorbed by the hair follicle. The light specifically targets melanin/pigmentation in the hair, damaging the follicle and inhibiting hair growth whilst leaving the surrounding skin and area unharmed.
Is Laser Hair Removal Painful?
Laser treatment is virtually pain-free, especially when using the Diode Laser instead of IPL. The Ice 3 Wavelength Diode Machine used by SCLaser has ice cooling technology on the head of the laser gun, cooling the area as soon as the laser is emitted.
Generally, when undergoing treatment the area will feel slightly warm and the sensation can feel like an elastic band snapping against your skin. However, sensitive areas with denser hair growth such as the Hollywood region will tend to be more painful than other areas such as legs.
How Far Apart Will My Treatments Be?
It all depends on the area of treatment and your skin tone but general rule of thumb is:
- Face- 2-4 week intervals
- Underarms- 4-6 week intervals
- Bikini, Legs, Back, Chest- 4-6/8 week intervals
This is because different areas of the body have different hair growth cycles and it is vital for your laser treatment to align with your growth cycles so your treatment can be as effective as possible (explained further in the answer below).
Why Does Laser Treatment Require Multiple Sessions?
We have a hair growth cycle which consists of 3 phases: Growing/Active Phase (Anagen), Shedding Phase (Catagen), Resting Phase (Telogen).
The Anagen phase is the only phase where laser hair removal is effective. Only 20% of hair is actively growing during one Anagen growth phase, this is why multiple sessions are required to ensure all hairs in that area have been treated.
Is My Skin Type Suitable For Laser Treatment?
Thanks to advancements in technology there are now a multitude of machines that can treat all skin types by operating at different wavelengths. This of course depends on the Clinic you are visiting and what Laser Machine they use, if an IPL machine is used for example then only fair-moderate skin types can be treated.
The Ice 3 Wavelength Diode Machine used by SCLaser can treat ALL Skin Types and operates at 3 different Wavelengths: Alexandrite 755nm (Treats Lighter Skin Types and Fairer Hair) Diode 810nm (Treats Moderate Skin Types and Darker Hair), Nd Yag 1064nm (Treats Darker Skin Types and Darker Hair). Fairer hair can be treated but treatment on darker hairs is more effective due to the melanin/pigment preset in the hair shaft.
Is Laser Hair Removal Permanent & Is it Cost Effective?
Laser Hair Removal is the most permanent hair removal solution available and if successful can remove up to 90% of unwanted hairs, which is significant and life changing for most! And any hairs that do grow back become much finer, far few and fairer.
It is recommended once you finish your treatment plan to continue with annual maintenance sessions to keep unwanted hairs at bay.
Reasons why hair might start growing back even after a successful treatment plan is simply down to hormones. Hormones’ in our body constantly fluctuate especially during periods such as pregnancy, post pregnancy and menopause these changes can stimulate hair growth even in previously inhibited hair follicles from laser.
If you are a regular candidate for waxing then it is certainly more cost effective than waxing. Waxing is not a permanent solution so it is an expense you will have to continue to pay every 4-6 weeks. Buying products such as epilators are not inexpensive either and also painful. The major benefit people notice immediately from receiving laser treatment is time; so many of my clients say to me “I used to have shave every other day and now I only shave before my treatment”. Saving hours of time on an extremely boring task! To me it is cost effective in terms of time and money.
